St Andrews has no station of its own, so the journey from Edinburgh finishes with a short bus ride. Take a ScotRail, LNER or CrossCountry train from Edinburgh Waverley to Leuchars, about 64 minutes with three stops, then the 77 or 99 bus, run by Moffat & Williamson and Stagecoach, for the last 12 minutes into St Andrews. With a typical wait of around 12 minutes at Leuchars, the whole trip takes about an hour and a half, and the best connections bring it nearer an hour and a quarter.
On the weekday we checked, connecting departures left Waverley about every half hour from 05:30 to 23:00, though not on a fixed pattern. That came to 34 departures across the day. The longest gap was in the evening, just over an hour between the 19:31 and the 20:34. The 23:00, the last, gets to St Andrews at about half past midnight.
Driving takes about as long as the train and bus: the road route is 53 miles via the A92, roughly 1h30, so the choice between them comes down to whether you want the car at the other end.
Some journeys use Cupar rather than Leuchars as the place to swap train for bus. They took about the same time, roughly an hour and a half, but left Waverley at times the Leuchars connections already covered, such as 06:30, 08:31, 11:30 and 17:46, so they add no extra departures. A train to Leven with a bus from there also appeared, leaving Edinburgh at 12:20, but it took over two hours.
The bus finishes in St Andrews about 500 metres from Market Street, a walk of around seven minutes.
Journey times and changes below come from the rail and bus timetables for Tuesday 1 December 2026. Weekend and holiday timetables differ, so check the day you travel.
