Dundee to St Andrews by Train and Bus

By St Andrews Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

The quickest way from Dundee by public transport is the train to Leuchars and the 77, 77A or 99 bus. The train, run by ScotRail, LNER or CrossCountry, takes 12 minutes and makes one stop, and the bus, run by Stagecoach and Moffat & Williamson, covers the final 12 minutes and 14 stops from Leuchars into St Andrews. With about nine minutes between the two on the typical journey, the trip takes around half an hour in all, and just under that on the best connections. With the bus leg only 12 minutes long, most of that half hour is the short train ride and the wait at Leuchars.

Connections through the day

On the weekday we checked there were 35 of these train-and-bus connections from Dundee between 05:41 and 22:31, roughly two an hour. The first gets to St Andrews at about 06:15 and the last at about 23:05. They are not evenly spaced, though: gaps between departures ranged from under ten minutes to just over an hour, and the one real wait came in the early evening, when the 17:40 was followed by the 18:47.

Bus or Cupar instead

Bus-only journeys appeared as well: seven with a change at Seagate, between 06:05 and 22:54, and five by bus all the way, between 10:25 and 18:10, all taking about 40 minutes. Routings through Cupar took between 50 minutes and an hour. Neither is quicker than going via Leuchars, but the 18:11 bus is worth knowing about if you are leaving Dundee during that early-evening gap after the 17:40.

By car it is only 13 miles via the A91, about 23 minutes, so driving is roughly ten minutes quicker than the typical train and bus.

Arriving

At the St Andrews end, Market Street is about seven minutes’ walk from where the bus stops, a little over 500 metres.
